Bad news – No steak
News flash. I do not pass steak. Hmm… How did I not see that coming? Steak is one of the items that is 5% or less reactive (page 82) and yet, it’s been a problem food for me my whole life. Red meat in general has always upset my stomach. I have gone years trying to eat more of it because I’m trying to get over having upset stomach. I sound like one of those crazy people in the book that says, steak has been hurting my stomach for years so I’ve been trying to eat it more so that I’ll build up immunity to the upset stomach. Um, no, it doesn’t work like that.
Just like the book predicts, after a reactive day, I see a spike in my weight. Besides the incremental increase of 0.2 pounds that happened a few times, I have seen a steady drop or maintenance of weight EXCEPT for the two days after I eat one slice wheat bread and now the morning after I eat a steak. This is exactly the kind of information I am after!
Today is the first day in 18 days that I eat a meal out at a restaurant. I have that one BBQ party at work but this is the first time navigating a restaurant. I go to Vapiano’s which is a German cafeteria style place that serves pastas, salads, and sandwiches. I read and re-read the section in the plan about eating out (page 142):
- Eat friendly foods since the restaurant is the test
- Avoid chicken since it tends to mask sodium
- Try to minimize sodium
- Drink wine
- Enjoy yourself
I do eat (mostly) friendly foods, I try to minimize sodium, and I do enjoy myself.Ok, so I get three out of five. I end up choosing chicken because besides pork, I don’t have any other proteins. I don’t drink wine because I’m with my boss and two other colleagues.
I order a veggie spiralizer on Amazon. Joe says it works great and I snap a photo! It makes a bowl of zucchini “pasta” with a fraction of the calories and carbs. Yay! Plus zucchini is a super low reactive food. It’s one of the early foods we eat and continue eat on the plan.
- Flax granola with rice cereal flakes with 1/2 apple and coconut milk
- At Vapiano, mixed green and spinach salad with chicken, zucchini, carrots, balsamic vinaigrette (not tested), and shaved parmesan
- Carrots with homemade hummus
- Chicken strips
- Spiralized zucchini, grated carrots, with parmesan
- Red wine and chocolate

Here it is…. again, my breakfast.
OK, so my Vapiano salad is actually photo worthy. I admit, it is hard not to order a big bowl pasta like usual. And the book says I should drink wine, I hate to defy the book ; )
The spiralizer in action
Dinner is zucchini pasta, carrots, and chicken with parmesan.
