As I find myself playing less and less tennis, I find the need to overcompensate with gear and clothing. I mean, why else should someone play tennis other than to “look the part?”
First step, buy a new racket and get colored strings. I’ve always wanted colored strings. I’ve been playing with the same Babolat Drive Lite Z in magenta with boring white strings since I started years ago. I loved how light the racket was and more importantly, I loved the colors.
Now fast forward and I run across a great deal on a new Wilson Ultra racket at a consignment sale. Score! Plus I finally get my new colored strings!
If you’re expecting an in depth review of the racket, no such luck. It turns out I’ve barely played with it but it is super cute. Queen City Tennis does my re-stringing and Drew there told me that sometimes people just want a new racket like an accessory. It’s not like they need it. Amen!
Of course, it’s time to upgrade my tennis bag too. I finally join the ranks of ladies carrying the Maggie Mather tennis bag. I’ve resisted this bag for years citing it is too plain or not tennis specific enough but now I know the draw. The bag is simple, versatile and because it’s not covered in a tennis racket print or the shape of a racket, it can absolutely serve double duty.
Having been born in the south, I immediately take it from the store to the monogram booth at the mall. I’ve got to mark my stuff!
For those that didn’t know I sell just about anything and everything. I grab the seam ripper and pull off the old monogram from my old All For Color tennis bag and promptly sell it Facebook. Whaaaaat? Someone bought a previously monogrammed used tennis bag? Why yes they did! They even messaged me later expressing how cute it was and how they couldn’t wait to use it.
Remember that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure AND marketing and timing are king! Stay tuned for a series on how to sell broken trash. True story.
In summary, sometimes you have to be honest that looking the part is the least you can do in the game of tennis 😁 and lob over your opponents when they’re rushing the net.
